Computer & Network Security Your small business or home computer is a popular target for intruders. Why? Because intruders want what you’ve stored there. They look for credit card numbers, bank account information, and anything else they can find. Including your identity. By stealing that information, intruders can use your money to buy themselves goods and services. But it’s not just money-related information they’re after. Intruders also want your computer’s resources, meaning your hard disk space, your processor, and your Internet connection. They use these resources to hide, host illegal content or attack other computers on the Internet. Raven at the Mizzen can secure your home and business computers and networks by conducting a computer (or network) Security Assessment. And make recommendations based thereon. Or if the operation is small enough (such as in homes and small businesses) Raven at the Mizzen can simply help with the installation and implementation of basic security programs directly. Pricing for securing computers and network devices is generally $100 to $500 per host (in focused jobs: pertaining to a server or two or three, etc. or small network operations) but is negotiable based on the specifics of the situation, as client operations and needs differ. Package deals for networks with many hosts can be negotiated at a much cheaper rate (per host in total), as many networks house hundreds or thousands of hosts. It depends on the level of focus and effort that the client wants committed to the host/s. The product of which may be a set of recommendations that the client employs based on the current network architecture and security posture. That information can either be gleaned from the results of a Computer Security Assessment or a network topology map provided by the client. A certain amount of assessing is likely to be needed in any case.
Computer Security Assessments
Hacking on the Internet is pervasive. If you have not taken intelligent and effective steps to secure your computers and networks, they are egregiously exposed. And so are all of the assets thereon: all data, clients, and your reputation. Properly implemented network security controls, both management processes and technology, are needed to thwart intentional attacks, to minimize unintentional mistakes from trusted insiders and to prevent exposure of your valuable information and assets. Raven at the Mizzens' Security Assessment focuses on the security controls implemented for your internal, trusted networks. The assessment will be custom designed to cover whatever system platforms, routers, bridges, switches, or other network components provide the security for your organization. The technology review component consists of configuration analysis to give you a thorough understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of your servers and internal network components. The management review component consists of interviews with administrators and management and reviews of documented security policies, standards and processes. This provides you with insight into how your organization is prepared to handle the security of your trusted networks over time against potential threats from insiders or outsiders who get through your external security controls. Service covers: A review of your overall enterprise architecture to determine how it effectively isolates untested outside networks from gaining access to your internal, trusted networks and systems, as well as wireless assets. A review of your internal network design to determine how it effectively isolates insiders based on their business function and need to access your organization's valuable information assets. A review of the security design of your selected internal network security components (routers, remote access servers, bridges, wireless, etc.) to determine if any functions provided by them could cause undesirable security exposures. Upon request and negotiation additional services can be appended to the Security Assessment: A comprehensive review of the security management controls for: policy, organization, personnel, asset classification and control, network and computer management, business continuity, system development and maintenance, and legal compliance. A report describing the strengths and weaknesses found in all of the above activities with recommendations for improvements. An ancillary service to this one (upon request) is for Raven at the Mizzen to check in various places on the internet to see if your communications (or sensitive files) have been intentionally or accidentally made public. This is part of an Internet Intelligence service and can be added to the primary project. It depends on the level of focus and effort that the client wants committed to the host/s and network devices.
Penetration Testing
A penetration test is a method of evaluating the security of a computer system or network by simulating an attack by a malicious user (hacker). The process involves an active analysis of the system for any potential vulnerabilities that may result from insecure or improper system configuration, known and/or unknown hardware or software flaws, or operational weaknesses in process or technical countermeasures. This analysis is carried out from the position of a potential attacker, and can involve active exploitation of security vulnerabilities. Any security issues that are found will be presented to the system owner together with an assessment of their impact and often with a proposal for mitigation or a technical solution. The intent of a penetration test is to determine feasibility of an attack and the amount of business impact of a successful exploit, if discovered. In short it is a test designed to exercise the security components (within the scope of the project) in an attempt to gain unauthorized access to portions of your internal trusted network (and wireless extensions) from the perspectives of a trusted insider or an outsider who has penetrated your external defenses. An ancillary service to this one (upon request) is for Raven at the Mizzen to check in various places on the internet to see if your communications (or sensitive files) have been intentionally or accidentally made public. This is part of an Internet Intelligence service and can be added to the primary project. Pricing for conducting Penetration Testing on computers and network devices is generally $100 to $500 per host but is negotiable based on the specifics of the situation, as operations and needs differ. Data Recovery Data recovery is the process of salvaging data from damaged, failed, corrupted or inaccessible storage media when it cannot be accessed normally. Data can be salvaged from storage media formats such as hard disk drive, storage tapes, USB drives, SD cards, CDs, DVDs, and other electronic storage media. Inaccessible data or lost data can be due to physical damage to the storage device or logical damage to the file system that prevents it from being mounted by the host operating system. An additional cause may be the ravaging results of a malicious programs (such as a virus) intentionally deleting user files. Raven at the Mizzen does not house the capability to recover physical hard drive failures if the platter would require removal from the drive in a clean room. Clicking or grinding coming from the hard drive may be an indication of physical damage. Pricing for data recovery is based on the size of the drive to be recovered and the level of effort required to resurect the data. Data recovery starts at $100 for user data and specific user files from a personal computer type environment. It is the same for small drives such as SD cards, USB drives, CDs, and DVDs. The price only increases when assitional effort is required or the amount of data to be recovered increases. The price for Data Recovery services is negotialble based on the specific situation, as each scenario and environment is different.
Data Recovery Prevention (Purging, Sanitization, Wiping or Destruction of Sensitive Information)
Many operating systems, file managers, and other software provide a facility where files are not immediately deleted when the user requests that action. Instead, the file is moved to a holding area, to allow the user to easily revert a mistake. Even when an explicit deleted file retention facility is not provided or when the user does not use it, most computers do not actually remove the contents of a file when it is deleted. Instead, they simply remove the file's entry from the file system directory. The contents of the file -- the actual data -- remain on the storage medium. The data will remain there until the operating system reuses the space for new data. In some systems, enough filesystem metadata is also left behind to enable easy undeletion by commonly available utility software. Even when undelete is not possible, until the actual data is overwritten, it can be read by software that reads disk sectors directly. Computer forensics often employs such software. Likewise, reformatting, repartitioning or reimaging a system is not always guaranteed to write to every area of the disk, though all will cause the disk to appear empty to most software. Purging or sanitizing is the removal of sensitive data from a system or storage device with the intent that the data can not be reconstructed by any known technique. Purging is generally done before releasing media outside of control, such as before discarding old media, or moving media to a computer with different security requirements. A common method used to counter data remanence is to overwrite the storage medium with new data. This is often called a wiping or shredding a file or disk. Overwriting writes data over the file in question or over the whole drive. Daniel Feenberg, an economist at the private National Bureau of Economic Research, claims that the chances of overwritten data being recovered from a modern hard drive amount to "urban legend". An ancillary service to this one is for Raven at the Mizzen to check in various places on the internet to see if your communications (or sensitive files) have been intentionally or accidentally made public. Raven at the Mizzen is willing to act as a subcontractor to this and any of the listed services. Pricing for Data Sanitization starts at $100 (such as for a single file or small directory) and gradually increases as the amount of data (files and/or drives) increases. The pricing for such is negotialble as the level of effort and time for purging may vary due to media and level of security desired. Generally a 100 GB hard drive can be purged for $200. This too is negotialble depending on the situation.
Computer Forensics
No longer offered due to Virginia legislation.
Network Engineering
The Network Engineering service consists of planning, building, and configuring of business and home networks, as well as expansion and optimizing of current resources. Additionally, consulting and research in such things as: which firewall or router to choose and where to install it, setting up wireless networks and securing them are a few examples of this service. Feel free to inquire pertaining to your situation. Raven at the Mizzen is willing to act as a subcontractor to this and any of the listed services. Pricing for this service is negotiable as each project is unique and unprojectable, but an agreeable solution can be sought. System Administration System Administration services include: maintaining, and operating a computer system or network, installing, supporting, and maintaining servers or other computer systems, and planning for and responding to service outages and other problems. Other services may include project management for systems-related projects, supervising or training computer operators, and being the consultant for computer problems beyond the knowledge of technical support staff. Raven at the Mizzen is taking contracts for System Administratorship and may be held on retainer for such. Secure Communications The Secure Communications service enables people or businesses to share information over the internet (or a local network) wherein third parties cannot know what was transmitted. Various methods and technologies are available and may be employed to best solve the needs of the client. This service is limited to computer based communications such as: email, chat, and voice over IP (VOIP). Additionally, covert methods such as stegonography and encryption can be employed as part of the methodology of securely communicating. A vast amount of our communications take place over the internet. It is of paramount importance to ensure the communication is not intercepted and read. If you have any doubt, imagine what you could do with your competitors data. They intern could do the same or more to you with your data. You can be sure they are looking and would do so. As with many of the services listed, this service may merely consist of one to several teaching sessions and help with the technologies involved. Or it may include Raven at the Mizzen setting up the infrastructure and employing the technologies for the client. There is an enormous advantage to having an experienced agent assist you in such endeavors over trying to do it your self and believe the advertisements of popular software and online services. That is, if your data is actually sensitive. If you use ANY of the popular email or communications (text messaging: internet or phone) services, consider your commincations compromised. Raven at the Mizzen may also act as a digital courier on behalf of the client to ensure data is moved securely. If there is a one time transaction (or one of some frequency) that needs be effected, we may be contracted to ensure its safe transmission to virtually any point globally. An ancillary service to this one (upon request) is for Raven at the Mizzen to check in various places on the internet to see if your communications (or sensitive files) have been intentionally or accidentally made public. This is part of an Internet Intelligence service and can be added to the primary project. Pricing for the Secure Communications service is negotialble based on the clients scenario and the solution sought. Call to discuss and for projections based thereon. Encryption (Data Protection) Encryption is the process of transforming information (plaintext, pictures, databases, or any file) using an algorithm (a cipher) to make it unreadable to anyone except those possessing a key. The result of the process is encrypted information (ciphertext or an unreadable equivocation of any file that may then be decrypted with the key). Thus, with the password (or key) the file may then be decrypted to make the encrypted information readable again (i.e. to make it unencrypted). Encryption has long been used by militaries and governments to protect secret information. Encryption is now used in protecting information within many kinds of civilian systems, such as computers, networks (and data at rest) in the form of file storage. An encryption service or solution can be provided at a cost commensurate with the sensitivity and amount of data, as well as the level of effort required. This service (or solution) can vary from very inexpensive to moderate in price. This service starts at $100 as a minimum (for a single file or small directory) and gradually increases with the amount of data and level of effort. Generally an encrypted volume can be set up for the client for about $200. And all of the clients private data can be held therin. An agreeable solution can be negotiated to fit the requirements of the client with an acceptable price.

Security Consulting
Information Security
Raven at the Mizzen can help you establish an Information Security program for your business operations. Information security efforts protect information and information systems from unauthorized access, use, disclosure, disruption, modification, or destruction. The terms information security, computer security and information assurance are frequently used interchangeably. These fields are interrelated and share the common goals of protecting the confidentiality, integrity and availability of information; however, there are some subtle differences between them. These differences lie primarily in the approach to the subject, the methodologies used, and the areas of concentration. Information security is concerned with the confidentiality, integrity and availability of data regardless of the form the data may take: electronic, print, or other forms. Governments, military, financial institutions, hospitals, and private businesses amass a great deal of confidential information about their employees, customers, products, research, and financial status. Most of this information is now collected, processed and stored on computers and transmitted across networks to other computers. Should confidential information about a businesses customers or finances or new product line fall into the hands of a competitor, such a breach of security could lead to lost business, law suits or even bankruptcy of the business. Protecting confidential information is a business requirement, and in many cases also an ethical and legal requirement. For the individual, information security has a significant effect on Privacy, which is viewed very differently in different cultures. The Information Security service may include:starting an Information Security program, Information Systems Auditing, Data transmissions or Communicaitons, Business Continuity Planning, Digital Forensics (as required), Paper Information management and security, Website Sanitization, Data Storage security, Policy Review (or Creation as needed), any specific areas of interest requested by the client, and ancillary issues that may arise out of analysis of business operations. Information may be transmitted, stored, encrypted, or processed. In any case, its value derives from three main attributes or qualities, i.e., Confidentiality, Integrity and Availability (CIA). Information Systems are decomposed in three main portions, hardware, software and communications with the purpose to identify and apply information security industry standards, as mechanisms of protection and prevention, at three levels or layers: Physical, personal and organizational. Essentially, procedures or policies are implemented to tell people (administrators, users and operators)how to use products to ensure information security within the organizations. Princing for an Information Security package is negotiable , depending on the size and complexity of the business and the sensitivity of operations. This is generally a holisitic project, undertaking the most pertinent arenas of information security. For small businesses this could be siginificantly less.
Operations Security
Operations Security is a process that identifies critical information to determine if a client companies sensitive activities can be observed by adversary (corporations or countries) intelligence systems, determines if information obtained by adversaries could be interpreted to be useful to them, and then executes selected measures that eliminate or reduce adversary exploitation of clients critical information. Operations Security is a methodology that denies critical information to an adversary. Unlike security programs that seek to protect classified information, Operations Security measures identify, control, and protect generally unclassified evidence that is associated with sensitive operations and activities. Operations Security is generally regarded as not only a methodology, but also a mindset. Conveying this mindset to the client and the companies employees is part of the projects efforts. Training on this subject can be requested for the companies personnel and arranged. An Operations Security assessment is an intensive application of the Operations Security process to an existing operation or activity by a multidisciplined team of experts. Assessments are essential for identifying requirements for additional Operations Security measures and for making necessary changes in existing Operations Security measures. The Operations Security process consists of five distinct actions: identification of critical information, analysis of threats, analysis of vulnerabilities, assessment of risk, and application of appropriate operations security measures. Such services may apply to companies that conduct research and produce proprietary products and software. Online research may also show (to an outside entity) what the companies interests are and divulge the companies activities and research subjects and therefore projects. Such signatures can be masked and damaging mistakes mitigated. The sooner a company reacts reduces the likelihood of unwanted disclosure and observation by competitors. Protecting Trade Secrets is of vital importance, as if they are divulged, they are legally consumable and usable by a competitor. Pricing for Operation Security assessments or services varies based upon the companies size, complexity and sensitivity, as well as the scope of the project. Call to discuss and an agreeable solution will be sought. It'll most likely be a small price compared to the impact of losing ones information and methods to a competitor.

Feel free to call and discuss the details of your situation and we'll seek an agreeable solution.
Legal Requirements Compliance and Review
Certification and Accreditation (C&A)
All federal agencies in the United States must have their IT systems and infrastructure certified and accredited. Among industry experts, this certification and accreditation process is known as C&A. Title III of the E-Government Act (Public Law 107-347) entitled Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA) requires that all federal agencies develop and implement an agency-wide information security program designed to safeguard IT assets and data of the respective agency. FISMA is specific in its requirements and it stipulates that the information security program must include documentation and reports. FISMA forces federal agencies to understand the security of their systems and holds them accountable for resolving deficiencies. The methodologies that have evolved to address FISMA stipulations are sound ones and, though only federal agencies are required to abide by them, it would behoove financial institutions to adopt these methodologies to assess the security of their own systems and would show a solid case for "Due Dilligence" if completed. There are generally three methodologies used for C & A initiatives: DITSCAP, NIACAP and NIST. All three methodologies take into consideration the entire system, network, and application lifecycle from a security standpoint. In short, the C&A process is a manual audit of policies, procedures, controls, and contingency planning. While some information security reports can be obtained about systems and networks from an online penetration test, an online penetration test cannot tell you if an organization has security policies and procedures in place, and if they are following these policies and procedures. The C&A process is much more cumbersome than a network penetration test (sometimes referred to as a security scan or online vulnerability assessment). Raven at the Mizzen can undertake the C&A process on small government or business systems that are unclassified. Or can act as a subcontractor on a prime contrators C&A effort. Pricing for C&A efforts can be negotiated per contract.
HIPAA
"HIPAA" is an acronym for the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act of 1996 (August 21), Public Law 104-191, which amended the Internal Revenue Service Code of 1986. Also known as the Kennedy-Kassebaum Act, the Act includes a section, Title II, entitled Administrative Simplification, requiring: Improved efficiency in healthcare delivery by standardizing electronic data interchange, and Protection of confidentiality and security of health data through setting and enforcing standards. More specifically, HIPAA called upon the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to publish new rules that will ensure: Standardization of electronic patient health, administrative and financial data Unique health identifiers for individuals, employers, health plans and health care providers Security standards protecting the confidentiality and integrity of "individually identifiable health information," past, present or future. This requires massive changes in most healthcare transaction and administrative information systems. This affects virtually all healthcare organizations – including all healthcare providers, health plans, public health authorities, healthcare clearinghouses, and self-ensured employers – as well as life insurers, information systems vendors, various service organizations, and universities. Raven at the Mizzen can act as a sub-contractor to HIPAA compliance efforts, by analyizing regulations as they apply to the organization and conducting technical testing to verify configuration controls are set properly. Pricing for assisting with HIPAA efforts is negotialble based on the scope of the project and degree of involvlement on the part of Raven at the Mizzen.
Computer Examinations (Investigations)
No longer offered due to recent Virginia legislation.
Troubleshooting and Technical Assistance: Viruses, Trojans, Worms and Backdoors
Raven at the Mizzen can examine your business or home computer (or network: servers and network devices) for problematic issues, and conduct general trouble shooting and technical assistance as well as dealing with Viruses, Trojans, Worms and Backdoors. During the process of general trouble shooting (or technical assistance) Raven at the Mizzen will notify you if any signs of viruses, trojans, worms and backdoors are encountered. Many such programs are not recognized by virus software. Perhaps even 50% of the malware programs plaguing the internet do not have a verifyable signature for virus programs to search for. Raven at the Mizzen will seek the most likely cause of the issue and not directly pursue such malware unless suspected (and/or directed) by the client. If, indeed, you are compromised by an intruder, you may be hosting websites and storing files for an unauthorized person with access to your computer. Such websites or files (hosted on your computer) may contain questionable content, which you could be legally responsible for. Unauthorized access to your business servers, PC's, network devices and data could mean a catastrophic failure in terms of business or the ability to operate. Perhaps you have an old (or current and operational) server that you do not know the password to, Raven at the Mizzen can assist you in getting access to the operating system and regaining control of the server. Pricing for trouble shooting or technical assistance starts at $100 and is $35 per hour for additional time and effort. In any case, if many hosts are involved, a package deal can be made. Feel free to call and discuss your prospective issue and postulate whatever scenario you may be dealing with. Open discussion and communications on such issues are welcome and usually require some time to articulate and come to agreements on. Digital Forensic methods are not used for such inquiries, but the more conventional methods of automated scanners.
Competitive Intelligence
Competitive Intelligence is both a process and a product. The process of Competitive Intelligence is the action of gathering, analyzing, and applying information about products, domain constituents, customers, and competitors for the short term and long term planning needs of an organization. The product of Competitive Intelligence is the actionable output ascertained by the needs prescribed by an organization. Competitive Intelligence is an ethical and legal business practice. (This is important as CI professionals emphasize that the discipline is not the same as industrial espionage which is both unethical and usually illegal). The focus is on the external business environment. There is a process involved in gathering information, converting it into intelligence and then utilizing this in business decision making. The term is often viewed as synonymous with Competitor analysis but Competitive Intelligence is more than analyzing competitors — it is about making the organization more competitive relative to its existing set of competitors and potential competitors. Customers and key external stakeholders define the set of competitors for the organization and, in so doing, describe what could be a substitute for the business, votes, donations or other activities of the organization. Corporate espionage is illegal, but corporate stupidity can be priceless to a competitor. A huge amount of companies publish their crown jewels right on the internet for everyone to access. There are methods of manipulating search engines to search for hidden data and things published to the internet accidentally. This makes the information public domain...or at least, legally accessible, for you to read. If it is copy wrighted, you can not directly resell the data or product as it is. But it is yours to use. What about your competitor would you like to know? It's worth looking for, at the very least. Additionally, what about you or your company is publically available that you would not want published? Have you searched for that? You should, as others are. But we'll do a good job of it. Truly public domain information can be repackaged and resold, as it is done with hundreds of thousands of copies of books and publications per year. If you can find it. But trade secrets are only legally protected if they are not publically published. If they are accessible via searching on the internet, they are free game...legally. Raven at the Mizzen can efficiently conduct such specialized Internet searches on your behalf. Pricing for specific data items is $100 plus any additonal time required at $35 per hour. Or, if the situation warrants, other pricing arrangements can be agreed upon.
Internet Intelligence, Reconaissance and Surveillance
Raven at the Mizzen can gather intelligence for whatever (legal) purpose that you desire. Generally, anything that can be researched via search engines on the Internet is free game and a report can be created thereof. There are many methods of using search engines and other programs to find hidden data that are not readily known to the public that can be employed on your behalf. Additionally, general intelligence gathering can be aimed at whatever (cyber) target (or subject matter) you require. Part of the Internet Intelligence service is for Raven at the Mizzen to check in various places on the internet to see if your communications (or sensitive files) have been intentionally or accidentally made public. This is part of an Internet Intelligence service and can be added to the primary project. Internet reconaissance can be conducted on targets (or information subjects) of your choice to scout out what is out there at the moment and give a situation report based on the findings. Additionally, internet surveillance can be conducted on virtually any cyber location or entity. This would entail an ongoing search and surveillance effort for a data item (or items) or simply persistently checking certain locations (or as much of the Internet can be sweepingly searched) for new data on a certain subject. Pricing for Internet Intelligence starts at $100 plus any additonal time required at $35 per hour. Or, if the situation warrants, other pricing arrangements can be agreed upon.
General Research
If you need research perfomed on subjects that you do not have the time or technical expertise to perform, Raven at the Mizzen can conduct it on your behalf. Data can be gathered from multiple sources via various disciplines, compiled, analyzed and distilled into a digestible report. Rappahannock County Virginia does not require a business license to conduct business within its borders, therefore we do not have one. If there is any service, product or otherwise that sounds in the least illegal or questionable, it is not the intent of Raven at the Mizzen to be (or do) so. Many terms, such as: "intelligence" are used as they are effective marketing terms and describe a type of information gathering service that is efficient and professional. If something on this site is even questionably in breach of US law, email us or call to discuss it and a favorable and solution will be sought. Raven at the Mizzen recently removed all references to performing Digital Forensics, as we were heard that Virginia legislation pertaining to such may have changed. We are in the process of researching this matter.
A Trade Secret: is the subject of reasonable efforts to maintain its secrecy. Trade secrets are not protected by law in the same manner as trademarks or patents. Probably one of the most significant differences is that a trade secret is protected without disclosure of the secret. The lack of formal protection, however, means that a third party is not prevented from independently duplicating and using the secret information once it is discovered. The sanctioned protection of such type of information from public disclosure is viewed as an important legal aspect by which a society protects its overall economic vitality. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trade_secret
